Three-dimensional round sculptures are not used in ancient buildings. They are usually carved on some pavilions with some flower baskets and inverted lions. For example, in the "West Garden" in Pingshan Hall, Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, in a pavilion next to the "Five Springs in the World", a three-dimensional flower basket is carved under each corner of the cornice. Although the work of this three-dimensional flower basket is not fine, the beauty of the shape is beyond reproach. Although the three-dimensional round sculpture is most suitable for small pieces of furnishings that are specially designed for appreciation; but large-scale ancient buildings, especially the palaces of the emperors, are decorated with three-dimensional round carvings. For example, the architectural woodcarving decoration in the Forbidden City in Beijing, some vivid wood carvings, golden dragons, phoenixes, etc., are expressed by three-dimensional round carvings.
Shallow carvings are used less in ancient buildings because they are best suited for large-area sheets. However, there are also many ancient buildings in the Jiangnan gardens, which are decorated with shallow carvings.
