My island cotton genome sequencing is basically completed
The reporter learned from the 2014 International Cotton Genome Conference held in Wuhan: Zhu Longfu team of Huazhong Agricultural University has basically completed the genome sequencing of China's native sea-island cotton, which is expected to solve the problem that China's cotton fiber quality and disease resistance cannot be both.
Zhu Longfu introduced that China's cotton production has surpassed that of the United States to rank first in the world. There have been significant progress in the research on cotton fiber development mechanism, genetic analysis of quantitative traits, germplasm creation and bioinformatics. However, traits such as fiber quality and disease resistance still need to be improved.
In order to solve this problem, Zhu Longfu team started the genome sequencing project of Sea Island Cotton from 2011. Island cotton is the best quality cultivar at present, with the characteristics of long, thin and strong fiber. It is an indispensable raw material for textile high-count combed yarn and special fabric.
Zhu Longfu revealed that through the analysis of cotton genes, they have initially identified a gene that has a significant effect on improving cotton disease resistance traits and is effective against cotton verticillium.
