Oxidation Induction Time (OIT) is a measure of the time at which an autocatalytic oxidation reaction begins to occur at high temperature (200 ° C) oxygen. It is an indicator of the thermal degradation resistance of a material during molding, storage, soldering, and use. The Oxidation Induction Period (OIT) method is a method for testing the accelerated ageing of plastics in high temperature oxygen using differential thermal analysis (DTA) based on the exothermic reflection of plastic molecular chain breaks. The principle is to place a plastic pattern and an inert reference material (such as alumina) in a differential scanning calorimeter to rapidly replace the inert gas (such as nitrogen) in the sample chamber with oxygen at a certain temperature. The change in the DTA curve (differential thermal spectrum) due to the oxidation of the pattern was tested, and the oxidation induction period (time) OIT (min) was obtained to evaluate the heat aging resistance of the plastic.

The oxidation induction method is a sensitive accelerated test method. When the polymer is completely consumed by the antioxidant in high temperature oxygen, the oxidation reaction is rapid and a large amount of exotherm. The exothermic peak is easily determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The starting point is thus quantitatively characterized by time to understand the extent of oxidative degradation. In Figure 7.1, at A1, the instrument automatically switches the gas and switches the nitrogen to oxygen. This point is the oxygen-containing starting point and begins to calculate the oxidation induction time of the test sample.
