Progress has been made in the research on the source of biomass allocation model of Xinjiang habitat

In low-resource environments, the plasticity of plant biomass allocation patterns or phenotypes implies a complex interaction between environmental signals and individual development, not just a delay in plant development (individual development drift). To understand the impact of environmental factors on biomass allocation patterns or phenotypes, it is necessary to distinguish whether biomass allocation patterns are derived from environmental gradients or individual development drift.

The team of researchers Yan Li from the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences found that the soil texture significantly changed the biomass allocation ratio to the leaves and roots, but did not affect the biomass allocation ratio to the stems; at the same time, the soil texture also significantly changed the The root characteristics of the development trajectory, but did not affect the allometric relationship between basal stem diameter and plant height. The researchers confirmed by constructing the Nested-ANOVAs model that the soil texture gradient can contribute an average of 64–70% to the variation in the ratio of leaf and root biomass allocation, which is much greater than the contribution of individual development drift (14%). The contribution of individual developmental drift to the variation of stem biomass allocation ratio can reach 77% on average, which is much greater than the contribution of environmental gradient (20% -28%).

These results imply that environmental factors dominate the biomass allocation to the leaves and roots, while individual developmental drift controls the biomass allocation to the stems. In other words, the biomass allocation of plants to metabolic active organs is mainly affected by environmental factors, which is sensitive to environmental changes and has high plasticity; while the biomass allocation of metabolic inactive organs is mainly controlled by individual development drift, to the environment Change is insensitive and has low plasticity.
