Development trend of plastic containers in recent years
In the first four months of 2006, the output of plastic containers in China increased by 37.1% over the previous year, which was higher than the average increase of 17.9% in the entire processing industry.
Liao Zheng, chairman of the China Plastics Processing Industry Association (CPPIA), said at the NPE show in Chicago, USA: “This shows that China’s plastics industry has continued to grow steadily, and its development rate is maintained at about twice the growth rate of GNP.â€
From January to April this year, the output of plastic containers reached 460,000 tons. The output of plastic pipes reached 686,000 tons, an increase of 35.4%; followed by fiber knitted products, an increase of 30.1%, and production of 908,000 tons.
The three markets that grew by single digits are the synthetic leather, artificial leather and plastic film markets, with increases of 1.4%, 8.1% and 8.2%, respectively.
Resin suppliers and composite producers also showed a steady growth. The output of resin and composites increased by 22.6% to 8 million tons. The increase in acrylic resin production was significant, with an increase of 23.5% in the first four months of this year, compared with 12.3% for the year.
Liao said at a press conference held during the NPE: "According to estimates, the growth in the consumption of plastic raw materials in 2006 will be higher than in 2005."
Domestic and international press makers have predicted at Chinaplas that this year's machine market will rebound, and this prediction has been confirmed by statistics. Although the machine output in 2005 contracted by 5.4%, in the first four months of this year, the press manufacturers increased their output by 27.4%.
In 2005, the value of imports and exports of plastic products in China rose rapidly, with an increase of 17.3% and 30% respectively. However, imports of products fell by 2.4% and exports rose by 14%. Liao explained that China is transforming into higher value-added products for production and purchase.
Joachim Vettkotter, secretary of EUROMAP, also spoke at NPE. He said that European exports of plastic machinery accounted for 54.6% of the world's exports, but European exports to China are only global China exports 39.4%. He explained that this is because the Chinese market has always been a soft spot for Japanese machines. Taiwan is another important machine supply area, and exports to mainland China are also very large
