Novel design makes lemon juice packaging more attractive

The high degree of design fidelity makes it seem that people can smell the aroma of oranges. The new lemon and lime beverage bottles are designed to use a variety of visual and tactile factors to give a sense of freshly picked fresh fruit. The 15 oz. and 32 oz. green PET bottles designed by Mott Company of Stanford, Connacht, USA, and Conster International, a PET container manufacturer, use an overall shrink sleeve. The upper part of the bottle is bulbous and has a granular shape. The rough surface makes the top of the bottle look like lemon or lime.

“This plan was implemented from the beginning of 2002,” said ReaLemon/Realime’s brand manager. “First, we want to make our brand keep up with the times and make timely use of in-house production technology to achieve greater success. Revenue, but also to abandon the use of heavy glass bottles as a product packaging commonly used in such beverages."

The bottom of the bottle is a standard cylindrical shape that tapers at the neck to form an elliptical fruit shape. There are two V-shaped protrusions on the bottom of the bottle and below the bottle neck that represent lemon or lime, thus creating a three-dimensional effect. “It feels like the lemon juice is being squeezed out of the lemon,” Bergenfeld said. “This new look reinforces the sensory effects of the product on the shelf and reinforces the brand’s leadership.”

Bill Eaton, engineering manager for packaging at Mott's juice and ingredients division, recalls the design of the bottles: “The shape of the lemon seems appropriate, but the combination of lemon shape with the beverage bottle is a major challenge.” He also said that another challenge is to perfectly combine the design of the label and the graphic of the label with the geometry of the bottle.

The set of logos is the Hughes design company's idea - with vibrant yellow and green (Realemon) / green shades (Realime) and bold type of brand logo, depicting fresh fruit slices immersed in the appearance of moisture . The label film is processed by American Fuji Seal. Fuji Seal labels the labels in seven colors plus two whites for gravure printing to achieve opacity. The bottle caps for the lemon and lime juice bottles are the bright yellow and dark green polypropylene flare caps produced by the Zeller-Plastic company.

Constar supplied PET preforms and conducted performance verification tests on these bottles. The bottles were blown from Mott誷s factory in New York and used two existing Sidel SBO 16 biaxial stretch blow molding machines. . The product is cold-filled and can guarantee a shelf life of 9 months.

According to Mott`s company, the new packaging of 15 ounces and 32 ounces of Realemon and 15 ounces of Realime beverages, the average retail price is exactly the same as the previous price of the same beverage, 15 ounces of 2.09 US dollars, 32 ounces $2.65.
