Color Connoisseur

A Color Connoisseur)

After the end of World War II, the Ozzie brothers opened a photogravure printing factory in New York, the Quality Printing Plant. This is referred to as Q factory for short. The company has always been known for its high-level production process.

The Q factory is very active in accepting new technologies. The principle that guides the company's forward development is to improve the original technology and manufacturing process instead of simply replacing them.

The Q factory installed the Quantel Graphic Paintbox software first and used it for high-end revisions. It was also the first company to use waterless printing technology to improve the drying problem in offset printing; then it introduced a desktop publishing system, and then transferred it. Back-up offset printing technology. But they did not stop here, but continued to try new technologies and test them, always the earliest users of new products, such as Fujifilm FinalProof digital halftone color proofers.

The company believes that although there will inevitably be technical outdated problems, they can be upgraded and eventually bring greater benefits.

This family-owned business has several branches, including the Rapoport Printing Division and the Gotham Imaging Division. But they are operating as a whole. Recently, a new digital printing division was established.

Q's customers are mainly concentrated in high-end cosmetics, fashion, advertising, and audiovisual markets, and most of their business is located in New York. As more and more pre-press and repair work can be done within the customer's company, Q is left with high-end, color-selective print jobs. They are positioning themselves in a market for quality and service, and only in this way can they compete with the other 3,000 printing companies in New York.

The company still continues to use a special printing process called Stonetone Printing, which was invented and patented by one of the company’s founders, Rapoport. In the "black press" printing operation, this process can be used to replace the four-color overprinted black color with a separate black print with a layer.

One of the reasons for stopping the use of the waterless printing process is the unsatisfied demand. Another reason is that it is difficult for customers to understand what the results of the products are. In particular, when the company cannot complete all the operations of the operation, it is likely to be produced with other printing companies. Mismatch. In addition, problems arise when matching the proofs because their dot gain values are different. Although the reproducibility and consistency of waterless printing production are relatively good, Q does not exist in isolation, so there are sometimes related matching problems.

After the company installed the Kodak Aprroval system, it became the earliest user of digital proofing. When managers knew that Fujifilm would introduce a new halftone digital proofer, Luxel FinalProof 5600, the purchase decision was being made.

The company has used the Fujifilm Color-Art simulation proofing system, and they have produced PictroProof thermal transfer proofing and continuous tone digital proofers, which are used for internal color correction and to determine the shift or repair of the dominant color. In the past three to four years, the main materials used by them were all of the Fuji brand, so no matter whether they were making plates, filming, or proofing, they had never been scrapped.

With regard to those special equipment, the company's manager said that FinalProof's use of colorants instead of dyes is a key selling point. “The pigments are more similar to the colors. This is the principle used by the simulation proofing system. In fact, FinalProof uses exactly the same colorants as Fuji Color-Art, and we are happy to say that they are perfectly matched.”

This is particularly important in the record of cosmetics. The factory often receives hundreds of advertisements for products such as lipsticks, eye shadows, and mascara. It requires us to export the same products as the actual products, and even require the same effect as the skin. These are difficult to copy or generate documents. But with such a device, there is no problem with matching.

Film, or digital file?

Under normal circumstances, the use of digital proofing is only to see whether the final output is a digital file or a color separation film, depending on the needs of customers. And some customers need proofs with outlets. To become an expert, if there isn’t an outlet in the proofs, it is not appropriate. Therefore, they are willing to take risks. If any customer’s product has a moire, we are responsible for it as a prepress.

When using digital files, you can directly use a computer-to-plate (CTP) device to output the product with higher fidelity of colors.

All behaviors are oriented to meet customer requirements
