How to master the "water-ink balance"

How to master the water-ink balance is a difficult point in the offset printing process. Here are some experiences I have summarized in my long-term work.
Practice has proved that when the water content of the layout is too large, the ink color on the printed sheet is correspondingly lightened. On the contrary, if the moisture content of the layout is too small, the ink volume is correspondingly reduced to adapt to the new balance, so that the color depth of the ink is consistent.

We know that if the moisture is too small, the blank part will become dirty, and too much moisture will affect the printing quality. In this regard, I summarize the following points:

1. Impede the normal delivery of ink, forming a void and false impression;
2. The ink color of the product is uneven, especially before and after printing;
3. Increasing the deformation of the paper will make the graphic overprint inaccurate;
4. Excessive paper absorption causes curling and uneven paper collection;
5. Wet the roller pad paper or make the roller shell uneven;
6. Due to the fading of ink color, the image is shriveled, the outline is not developed, and the color is old;
7. The color strength of the ink drops, and sometimes the amount of ink has to be increased, so that the dots become mushy and the layers are unclear, resulting in the phenomenon of large water and large ink;
8. The color of the blot changes greatly, resulting in color error of the sample identification;
9. The printing gloss decreases, and the drying speed also slows down;
10. Accelerate the deinking of the ink roller, and the ink becomes larger, which will cause the plate to be dirty and stain the back of the printed sheet.

It can be seen that the amount of water used is one of the important signs of technical proficiency. Normally, the water consumption should be kept to a minimum when the water-ink balance is within the lowest range. However, it cannot be stipulated mechanically. The amount of water consumption depends on the speed of the machine, the graphic area of the layout, the nature of the paper, and the thickness of the printed ink layer.

The control of the water consumption of the layout should be based on the premise that the layout is not dirty. Whether the water storage of the layout can be correctly identified is a necessary condition for controlling the water consumption. At present, the identification of the amount of water is usually based on empirical estimates, which requires repeated exploration.

Here are some signs of moisture:

1. The entry "rolling" of the lower ink roller and water transfer roller accumulates into water droplets;
2. The blotting ink is light, it is not easy to deepen the ink color in time after adding ink;
3. There is a lot of ink on the surface of the ink roller, but the amount of blotting ink is not deep;
4. There is a big difference in ink color before and after printing interruption;
5. Compared with the original paper, the printed sheet is soft and weak;
6. The edge of the paper is curled downwards and the paper is unevenly received;
7. The wavy void phenomenon occurs on the imprint of the printed sheet and the edge imprint with a large blank area;
8. The rubber and plate cylinder pads are wetted by moisture;
9. Various other phenomena of "big water and big ink".

Through daily observation and analysis, we can find and control various phenomena of excessive water consumption in time to ensure the quality of printed products.
