Application of Expanded Polystyrene Waste

With the rapid development of the petrochemical and plastic industries, plastic products have been widely used in industry and agriculture and daily life. Due to its low foam density (25 kg/m3), low water absorption, good acid and alkali resistance, good sound insulation, and shockproof, decorative and easy molding, polystyrene (PS) is used in building materials, household appliances, etc. The use of a wide range of aspects, but also caused a more serious white pollution, its recycling rate of less than 20%. If the abandoned foamed PS is buried deeply, it will not be easily aged and hardly degraded, it will pollute the groundwater source, destroy the soil structure, and reduce the production of crops such as grain; if it is simply incinerated, it will seriously pollute the air and the atmosphere. 
In response to these problems, people have explored and practiced the use of foamed PS waste in the industrial road of chemical building materials, and have achieved satisfactory results, creating considerable economic benefits.

1 Lightweight roof insulation

The waste foaming PS is crushed, and the expanded perlite, the cement and the mortar are added, and the mixture is evenly mixed and then placed on the roof for curing for 3 days, naturally dried, and then smoothed into a lightweight concrete thermal insulation layer with the cement mortar. The materials made by this method have low production costs, good heat insulation, and cool in winter and cool in summer. 

2 waterproof membrane

The waste foaming PS is washed, dried, dissolved in a cheap benzene solution or chlorocarbon residue, and added with a toughening agent and a film-forming anti-seepage and anti-wear agent to form a viscose, blown or coated on the surface of the glass cloth, and dried. It is a waterproof membrane that can be used for waterproofing roofs or pipes. The solvent can be recycled after cooling. 

3 Fiber reinforced acoustic insulation board

The waste foaming PS is crushed into 0.1-0.5 cm granules, added to the cement and fiber-reinforced mixture, mixed thoroughly, and cured, and can be made into a lightweight sheet with excellent mechanical properties, which can be prefabricated into a composite exterior wall and indoor thermal insulation Sound insulation panels, blocks, can also be used for on-site pouring.

4 Concrete foam insulation board

Wash the waste foaming PS, crush into 0.1-0.5 cm particles, add 425 portland cement, the volume ratio of the two is 2 ~ 3:1; add the mass fraction of 1% to 3% of the early strength agent ( Inorganic base), stirring with water to form a slurry; then add rosin soap foaming agent, stir into a slurry. Into the mold, release after 1 h. Water curing for 7 days made of 10 cm thick plate, its thermal conductivity, compressive strength are better, can reach 95 cm thick clay brick wall insulation effect. When the roof is in use, wipe a layer of cement mortar on the board to protect the water, and then use a bituminous felt as a waterproof layer. 

5 Metal, Wood Doors and Glass Sealants

In the dissolving tank, add waste foaming PS 50kg, No. 200 solvent oil 40kg, xylene 50kg, stir and dissolve to remove impurities to obtain transparent PS compound. Add 13kg of No. 1788 technical grade polyvinyl alcohol in another dissolution tank, add 80kg of water, heat and dissolve at 30-90°C, slightly add 1kg of dibutyl phthalate and surfactant octylphenol polyvinyl ether, and then Add appropriate amount of bentonite and mix into a paste. The product has fast drying, good performance, and excellent acid and weather resistance. 

6 Asphalt enhancer

The addition of waste foamed PS crumbs to the molten asphalt can provide enhanced, heat-resistant, water-resistant properties and can be used as roofing and road building materials. 

7 Plant fiber reinforced insulation material

The waste foaming PS and the solvent are made into a 5% solution, and the crushed corn core plant fibers are added and mixed and pressed to form a heat insulating material. 

8 Anti-seepage and leakage agent

The waste foaming PS is used as a raw material, with a small amount of plasticizer, and produced by a hot melt process. The product dries quickly and has the characteristics of good sealing performance, strong adhesion, acid and alkali resistance, anti-aging and so on. Its waterproof anti-corrosion performance greatly exceeds the commonly used plastic ointment and asphalt ointment, the service life of up to 20 years. 

9 multifunctional resin adhesive

The multi-functional resin adhesive produced with waste foaming PS has the characteristics of good adhesion, high gloss, strong impact resistance, acid and alkali resistance, etc. It is used to produce various glass steel products and can greatly reduce the production cost. In addition, waterproof paint, satin paint, furniture putty glue and Other products can also be produced. 

10 rust-proof paint

The rust-proof rust-proof paint produced from waste foaming PS has low cost and can be directly applied to steel surfaces with certain rust. It has three functions of penetration, rust prevention and anti-corrosion. It can also be used for the surface paint of furniture.
