New PET alloy can produce single-layer beer bottles

A high-barrier PET blend developed by Futura Polyester of India can produce single-layer beer bottles with a shelf life of 3 to 6 months, and can withstand pasteurization (temperatures). It is a mixture of PET and PTN (poly(trimethylene phthalate)). PTN, based on Shell Chemical's Corterra PTT technology, has 18 times the CO2 barrier capacity of PET and PEN (diethylnaphthalate). ) 3.5 times; Oxygen barrier capability is more than 9 times that of PET, 2 times that of PEN. The 0.5-liter stretch blow-molded bottles produced from this alloy have a CO2 barrier capacity twice that of PET. To further increase O2's barrier capability, Futura added an oxygen scavenger as a masterbatch during injection molding. Tests showed no significant oxygen infiltration over 5 months. PTN also has higher heat resistance than PET, so bottles can be pasteurized (30 min at 60 °C) without bottleneck crystallization. Futura's price for this alloy makes PET/PTN beer bottles the same price as glass bottles.
