To grow vegetables with seawater
Chinese scientists have for the first time cultivated salt-tolerant crops. Researchers introduced the total genes of the wild seawater plants, mangroves and Dunaliella salina, into bio-techniques on freshwater crops such as eggplants, tomatoes, peppers, and cowpeas, and then extended them to rapeseed, rice, and trees, resulting in offspring with significantly improved salt tolerance. From potted plants and small soil cultivation to beach planting and then direct watering to seawater, they all succeeded and they have been passed to the fourth and fifth generations. This study used 10 years. The water on the surface of the earth occupies 70% of the earth's surface, and freshwater accounts for only 1.6% of the total water. This is obviously insufficient for humans, animals and plants that depend on fresh water for survival on earth. With increasing population and decreasing cultivated land, the cultivation of salt-tolerant crops and the development and utilization of salt-wrecked land and salty water resources to develop agriculture are important issues that biological science and technology urgently need to solve. The project is the national "Ninth Five-Year Plan" and key scientific and technological projects, and passed the national acceptance.
